Robux (once shown as R$) is the official virtual currency of Roblox. It launched back on May 14, 2007, and originally ran alongside a second currency called Tix (Tickets) until Tix was retired on April 14, 2016. Today Robux is the platform's one and only currency.
Robux is used to buy almost everything on Roblox — avatar accessories, game passes, and other creator-made items. Players can buy Robux with real money, or earn it by building experiences and selling virtual items. Spending it wisely lets you unlock more without overpaying.
On November 21, 2019, Roblox swapped the old "R$" symbol for the golden hexagon icon you see today — partly to avoid mix-ups with the Brazilian Real, which also uses "R$". Robux has even crossed into meme culture, most famously the "Bobux" joke that went viral in late 2020.
